You seem to know your way around Corp security, leading Corps/Alliances and similar stuff. Certainly. There&...>> Reminisce cautiously.

Certainly. There's nothing about this that's driven by regret or a desire to change things or pining for a "better" time. If I could go back, I also wouldn't: the EVE of 2003 was a buggy place with an even clunkier interface with tedious navigation and interaction, a lack of the player utilities we enjoy today (dotlan, etc.) and I'm certain I wouldn't tolerate it very well at all. It's been more of a mental exercise to sift through the memories for nuggets of ambition, tangents left undiscovered, or forgotten motives that drove me.

I've been asking myself "what was the thing that hooked you in 2003?" After investing so much time in the game, it's easy to forget what it was I was after to begin with. I've begun to answer that question, but I probably need another good mowing session to put it into words. :)

I think that Aba03 and Aba16 would largely get along pretty well if somehow they could meet in corp chat. He is, effectively, the same character with the same sort of moral bearing and interests. Aba16 might roll his eyes at some of the Aba03 thoughts and ideals, but all in all, they'd coexist nicely.

We think of EVE as a sandbox, but I really think it's more of a beach/shoreline. Through time, the tides come and go and erase recent history, and the occasional storm can reshape the entire thing. We squabble over sandcastles, but most come and go with the whims of the waves and other forces of nature beyond our control. I think of the character Abavus as a piece of driftwood, sometimes floating, and sometimes firmly buried in the middle of it, but mostly unchanging in shape as time marches on. Eve has changed much since 2003, weathered many storms and the shape of the shoreline has changed accordingly. In contrast, I'd like to think that while Abavus has more miles on his odometer, he's still mostly the same.Zoxehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11477561432614932495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6612994000158738514.post-54923626230399127642016-05-20T13:50:23.035-04:002016-05-20T13:50:23.035-04:00Strange, I too have concocted big Eve plans while ...Strange, I too have concocted big Eve plans while mowing.

That said, I consciously keep nostalgia at respectful distance. I not only can’t return to a time that no longer exists, I fear that current me, if I somehow actually found a way back, would not experience things at all like old me did thereby corrupting the fond memories that lead me to undertake the trip in the first place. There be dragons back their Abavus. Not in the sense of, “Oh I have to sit down and put some thought into this” but rather discovering small notions percolating to the surface that end up being connected to the 85%'s theme. I suspect in the end Neville’s post didn’t resonate with me because 2015 didn’t leave me feeling like a second class citizen (or first class or third class) any more or less than any other year did.

I’ve always maintained my subscription(s) to play the game at hand rather than on the promise of future content. And of course different regimes are going to want to put their fingerprints on the game and not just execute the plan left on their desk by their predecessors.

I guess my complaint is that in tired of seeing the same kind of segmented (specific system) dialog every keynote and every dev blog. CCP had on their roadmap WiS (dead), DUST (dead), new forms of incursions (dead?), Legion (dead? alive?), mobile apps (John Lander, dead), Valkyrie (too early to tell), WoD (sparkly vampires, dead (yes, pun here)), heavy-duty microtransactions (monocles, backfired), player-built gates (alive, according to Gorski leaks), stations (alive, very much so)

Bottom line, if the roadmap goals are _within_ EVE, they are generally accomplished and - if I may be biased - very well done. EVE itself is a much better place now than it ever was. Goals that reach _beyond_ EVE generally fail. The problem with that is that CCP must have another leg to stand on or as a company they are too exposed.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6612994000158738514.post-54830162022455903582016-02-15T17:24:30.609-05:002016-02-15T17:24:30.609-05:00Abavus,
I find your comment/elaboration both spot...Abavus,

I find your comment/elaboration both spot on and very likely impossible at the same time. If Eve had a Grand Unified Vision when it first started out, it certainly lost track of that vision for a good while and has only begun to find its way back to one in the last few years. Given such history, I’m not certain everything can be stuffed back into a GUV box. That said, an attempt at the task would still prove illuminatingly useful.

I’ll also point out that simple CCP employee turnover makes honing to a consistent GUV problematic. New people all too often want to do new things. In the time I’ve been around (since 2009), I’ve seen far too many extreme gyrations in what I take to be CCP’s vision for Eve for my comfort. Accordingly, I’ve one small piece of advice for CCP. Keep Seagull. Hang on to her like grim death itself. For God’s sake (as well as mine), don’t let her go.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6612994000158738514.post-37218077666332158372016-01-18T19:25:15.691-05:002016-01-18T19:25:15.691-05:00I’m reminded of a story my Dad told of he and ‘Tam...I’m reminded of a story my Dad told of he and ‘Tammy’, his Weimaraner bird dog. Out hunting pheasant one weekend, Tammy would point then flush the fowl whereupon Dad would raise his shot gun, fire and miss. After three misses in a row, Tammy grew frustrated. Refusing to point and flush the next pheasant, she instead snuck up on the bird herself, grabbed in by the neck giving in a good shake then brought the dead fowl to Dad dropping it at his feet giving him a “This is how it’s done” glare.
